What to do in and around Olne when it rains?

Had you imagined long walks in the Herve region, a bike ride or an afternoon outdoors… and the Belgian weather had other plans? Don't panic: a rainy weekend in Olne and the Liège region can absolutely be a successful weekend.

From Olne, several indoor attractions are easily accessible: heritage sites, mines, museums, chocolate, exploring Liège… And if the rain makes you want to slow down, staying at the cottage is also part of the pleasures of a stay in the countryside.

Here are our ideas for enjoying the region when the sun isn't shining.

Activities available within 20 minutes of Olne

Going underground at Blegny-Mine

If it's raining outside, why not go... underground?

Blegny-Mine is certainly one of the most unique visits to make near Olne. This former coal mine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, allows visitors to descend 30 and then 60 meters underground to discover the working conditions of the miners.

Wearing a helmet and a jacket, visitors board the mine cage before exploring the old tunnels with a guide. The underground tour lasts approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and is accessible to visitors at least one meter tall.

This is an outing that we recommend to both adults and families: it allows you to discover an essential part of the history of our region while completely forgetting about the rain for a few hours.

Good to know: the temperature in the mine is around 15°C all year round. A jacket is provided on site, but it's best to bring comfortable shoes.

Discover the Val-Dieu Abbey and Brewery

A different atmosphere in the heart of the Herve region: head towards the Val-Dieu Abbey , founded in 1216.

When the weather is gloomy, a visit to the abbey or its brewery is a lovely alternative to walks. Guided tours offer insights into the history of the site, and the combined tour includes a behind-the-scenes look at the brewery. The visit ends with a tasting of Val-Dieu beers — or apple juice — accompanied by abbey cheese.

Allow approximately one hour for the abbey visit and a little over two hours for the abbey and brewery package.

And since a rainy day sometimes makes you want to take your time, you can extend the outing with a meal at Casse-Croûte, located in the former stables of the abbey.

Our advice: check the times and book your visit before you leave, especially on weekends.

Activities within 30 minutes

A gourmet getaway centered around chocolate

The Pays de Herve and Verviers also make it possible to turn a rainy day into a gourmet day.

In Verviers, chocolatier Jean-Philippe Darcis offers a tour dedicated to the history and production of chocolate. Visitors discover the origin of cocoa, its arrival in Europe, and the work of the chocolatier, with a view of the workshops.

A visit that is particularly easy to suggest to a group composed of adults, children and teenagers: Chocolate is generally something everyone agrees on!

Please note that in 2026, the current museum is scheduled to close at the end of September to make way for a new concept, "Chocodyssée," which is slated to open in November. Be sure to check the opening dates before your visit.

And why not simply discover local producers?

A rainy day can also be an opportunity to discover the Pays de Herve in a different way: push open the door of a cheese shop, a bakery or a shop selling regional products, take the time to choose some specialties and then return to prepare an aperitif or a meal at the gîte.

Herve cheese, Liège syrup, brewery products, chocolate… Gastronomy is an integral part of discovering our region.

And finally, coming back with some good things to share around the table is a pretty nice way to end a grey day.

Spending a day in Liège when it's raining

About thirty minutes from Olne,Liège is probably our best option when a full day of rain is forecast.

Rather than trying to visit multiple places, we advise you to choose one or two locations and keep some time to enjoy the city centre, have a coffee or a leisurely lunch.

The Grand Curtius for history buffs

Located on the banks of the Meuse, the Grand Curtius brings together more than 5,000 m² dedicated in particular to archaeology, decorative arts, religious art, Mosan art and weapons.

It's an excellent option for spending several hours indoors while discovering the history of Liège.

The Aquarium-Museum for a family outing

With children or teenagers, we would prefer the University Aquarium-Museum of Liège .

The Aquarium features around 300 species, and the ticket also grants access to the House of Science, the Planetarium, and the Galleries of Botany and Evolution. It's therefore a particularly attractive option when rain seems set to continue all day.

On weekends, scientific activities are also offered at certain times.

The Museum of Walloon Life

Another option is the Museum of Walloon Life , in the heart of Liège. It allows you to discover daily life, traditions, trades and the evolution of Walloon society.

Its location is also convenient for combining the visit with a little exploration of the historic center when the rain stops.

Our plan for a rainy day in Liège

If we were to organize the day, we would keep it simple:

Morning: Aquarium-Museum or Grand Curtius
Lunch: Lunch in the center of Liège
Afternoon: Museum of Walloon Life, a few shops and a coffee or snack break
End of the day: calm returns to Olne

There is no need to fill every minute: strolling and stopping in a cafe is also part of a city trip.

What to do with children when it's raining around Olne?

It all depends, of course, on their age.

With young children , the Liège Aquarium is probably the easiest option. The fish, the different areas, and the scientific activities offer a variety of discoveries.

For children aged around 6 and up , Blegny-Mine offers a much more immersive experience than a traditional museum. However, please note: to descend into the mine, children must be at least one meter tall.

With teenagers , we would gladly choose Blegny-Mine, a day in Liège or a gourmet activity around chocolate.

And with several generations gathered together, don't necessarily look for an activity that will fill the whole day. A morning visit, lunch somewhere in the region, and a quiet afternoon at the gîte sometimes work much better than an overly packed schedule.

What if we decided... not to leave the cottage?

There is also another way to look at rain: to make no plans at all.

After all, going away for a few days with family or friends is also about finally having the time to be together.

At Moulin Endormi, a rainy day can become a cozy day: light the fire, take out the board games, organize a foosball tournament, watch a movie on Netflix, cook together or simply sit around the large table to chat.

With children, why not improvise an afternoon of games or baking? With friends, some local products from the Herve region, an aperitif and a good meal can easily replace the outing initially planned.

And if a break in the clouds appears, simply take advantage of it to go outside for a few moments and discover the paths around Olne.

The Sleeping Mill Council

Don't necessarily change your entire plan as soon as rain is forecast. In our region, a rainy day doesn't always mean eight hours of continuous rain.

Check the weather hour by hour: a cloudy visit in the morning could very well be followed by a walk in the afternoon.

And if the rain continues? You will have simply discovered Olne, the Herve region and Liège in a different way.

In summary: what to do near Olne when it rains?

For an activity nearby , choose Blegny-Mine or Val-Dieu.
For a full day indoors , head to Liège and combine a museum, the Aquarium and a gourmet break.
With children or teenagers , prioritize interactive experiences such as the mine or the Aquarium.
And for a truly relaxing day, simply enjoy the cottage, some local specialties and the pleasure of being together.

Because a successful stay in the Pays de Herve does not ultimately depend solely on the weather.
